hisap, hisapan ini membuat udara dari luar masuk ke dalam karburator.
Kecepatan udara mengalir melewati spuyer kecil, sehingga mengakibatkan tekanan
udara mejadi rendah, akibatnya bensin dalam ruang pelampung ikut terhisap naik
keluar melalui spuyer kecil.<br />
<br />
Bensin yang naik keluar bercampur dengan udara menjadi kabut/gas yang merupakan
campuran udara dengan bensin. Gas ini akan masuk ke dalam ruang bakar di
mesin untuk kemudian dibakar. Prinsip kerja karburator sebenarnya hampir mirip
dengan semprotan obat nyamuk.<br />

Tingkat kecepatan putaran mesin dapat dibagi atas 4 tahap yaitu ;<br />

: Pada posisi ini handle gas tidak diputar atau lepas gas, pada putaran ini
dipengaruhi oleh sekrup penyetel udara dan sekrup penyetel gas. Bila putaran
mesin tidak normal, maka penyebabnya adalah kedua sekrup penyetelan itu. Pada
putaran ini pula yang bekerja adalah spuyer kecil atau pilot jet, sedangkan
main jet sama sekali tidak bekerja. Bensin hanya memancar keluar melalui pilot
jet untuk bercampur dengan udara.<br />
<br />
2.Putaran rendah : Pada saat ini posisi handle gas diputar sampai 1/8
putaran, pada putaran ini yang berpengaruh adalah sekrup penyetel udara
dan coakan pada skep. Pilot jet / spuyer kecil masih tetap bekerja untuk
memancarkan bensin, sementara spuyer besar / main jet ikut memancarkan bensin
namun masih dalam jumlah yang lebih sedikit.<br />

3.Putaran menengah : Pada putaran ini posisi handle gas pada putaran 1/8
sampai 3/4, yang berpengaruh pada putaran ini adalah coakan skep dan posisi
jarum skep. Pada putaran ini spuyer besar atau main jet bekerja lebih banyak
memancarkan bensin , sementara spuyer kecil lebih sedikit memancarkan
bensinnya.<br />

4.Putaran tinggi : Posisi handle gas pada putaran 3/4 sampai penuh, yang
berpengaruh adalah besarnya lubang spuyer besar/ main jet. Pada saat ini yang
memancarkan bensin adalah spuyer besar atau main jet. Sementara spuyer kecil
tidak bekerja memancarkan bensin.<o:p></o:p></span></div>

Pada dasarnya karburator bekerja menggunakan Prinsip Bernoulli: semakin
cepat udara bergerak maka semakin kecil tekanan statis-nya namun makin tinggi
tekanan dinamis-nya. Pedal gas pada mobil sebenarnya tidak secara langsung
mengendalikan besarnya aliran bahan bakar yang masuk kedalam ruang bakar. Pedal
gas sebenarnya mengendalikan katup dalam karburator untuk menentukan besarnya
aliran udara yang dapat masuk kedalam ruang bakar. Udara bergerak dalam
karburator inilah yang memiliki tekanan untuk menarik serta bahan bakar masuk
kedalam ruang bakar.<br />

Kebanyakan mesin berkarburator hanya memiliki satu buah karburator, namun ada
pula yang menggunakan satu karburator untuk tiap silinder yang dimiliki. Bahkan
sempat menjadi trend modifikasi sepeda motor di Indonesia penggunaan
multi-carbu (banyak karburator) namun biasanya hal ini hanya digunakan sebagai
hiasan saja tanpa ada fungsi teknisnya. Mesin-mesin generasi awal menggunakan
karburator aliran keatas (updraft), dimana udara masuk melalui bagian bawah
karburator lalu keluar melalui bagian atas. Keuntungan desain ini adalah dapat
menghindari terjadinya mesin banjir, karena kelebihan bahan bakar cair akan
langsung tumpah keluar karburator dan tidak sampai masuk kedalam intake
mainfold; keuntungan lainnya adalah bagian bawah karburator dapat disambungkan
dengan saluran oli supaya ada sedikit oli yang ikut kedalam aliran udara dan
digunakan untuk membasuh filter udara; namun dengan menggunakan filter udara
berbahan kertas pembasuhan menggunakan oli ini sudah tidak diperlukan lagi
sekarang ini.<br />

pompa air tidak bekerja adalah temperatur mesin naik dengan cepat pada saat
mesin hidup. Pompa air juga perlu diganti apabila seal perapat telah aus atau
sudah tidak mampu menahan tekanan air. Dalam kenyataannya seringkali seal pompa
tidak tersedia di pasaran, sehingga apabila terjadi kebocoran air akibat seal
pompa, maka harus mengganti unit pompa secara keseluruhan. Untuk melepas pompa
dari sistem pendingin sebaiknya mengikuti prosedur yang benar. Demikian pula
pelepasan komonen-komponen pompa. Pelepasan dan pemasangan komponen yang tidak
benar akan mengakibatkan kerja pompa tidak optimal. Selanjutnya dalam kegiatan
